Most people find themselves short on floor space at some point in their lives, whether it’s because they are forced to temporarily share their home with an in-law, or because they simply have too many things and not enough room to store them. Murphy beds are an ideal solution to this problem, and while they aren’t exactly mainstream, there are plenty of stores that sell them if you know where to look! In this article, I will show you how to choose the best murphy bed store and how to build your own murphy bed from scratch so that you can save money on the final product.

Building the Frame
It’s important that your frame is level and square. To ensure it is, use a 4-foot level and adjust your 2×4 legs until you have level lines across all four. If you don’t have a level handy, you can download an app for your smartphone or buy yourself a bubble level. Making sure everything is straight will result in less frustration when attaching pieces later on.
Installing Brackets and Rails
Murphy beds are available in kit form, with all materials and hardware included. The most complicated part of installing a Murphy bed is building it, but Murphy Beds carries almost everything you need in one box, including all tools and brackets/rails. To install your brackets and rails , make sure the floor is clear from any obstacles, and that you have assembled the frame as per the instructions. Insert the upper rail into the top slots on each side of the headboard’s vertical boards, then insert the lower rail into both ends of the baseboard’s vertical boards. You should now have an installed bracket or rail on each side of your bed frame.
Installing Slats
First, purchase slats for your bed; these are available at most hardware stores. Measure and cut your slats accordingly, then install them on top of each other with plenty of screws. Keep in mind that it’s best to have an even number of slats—at least three—but no more than five. Once you have all your wood installed, screw in two feet at each end (to stabilize everything), and you’re good to go!
Finishing with Headboard and Footboard
1. Take your headboard and footboard and mark them with an X where you will mount each of your brackets. These should be about 3-4 inches from either side of your headboard or footboard. 2. Mount your brackets by drilling pilot holes (usually 1/8 inch). Be sure to use screws that are long enough for both mounting brackets, but not so long as to poke through each board when turned over.
