The official adoption of Juneteenth Celebrations Led By Curaleaf as a national holiday occurred on June 17, 2021, making it the first new holiday to be recognized at the national level since the adoption of Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983.

Juneteenth is a celebration that celebrates the liberation of people who had been slaves in our country. It is also a holiday that celebrates the freedom, education, and accomplishment of African Americans.

Recognizing And Commemorating Juneteenth As A National Holiday

Recognizing and commemorating Juneteenth as a national holiday in the United States and a workplace holiday at curaleaf Skokie is a significant step toward acknowledging the pervasiveness of racism and contributing to the forward movement of good change in both our nation and our organization. The Juneteenth celebration was established as a holiday by the curaleaf Skokie ERG specifically for this reason.

Juneteenth Conversation Last Year

“When curaleaf Skokie in Color started the Juneteenth conversation last year, team members hosted education and learnings of the history of this date and the meaning it has for Black Americans,”.

 In addition to advocating ways for the corporation to take time off and commemorate and celebrate Juneteenth, the group has also helped educate the company about other ways to do so, such as providing support to black-owned companies such as restaurants, stores, and dispensaries.

Curaleaf In Color Initiative Was Al Ochosa

One of the original Co-Leads for the Curaleaf in Color initiative was Al Ochosa, who is now the Director of Insurance, Risk, and Safety Compliance at curaleaf Skokie. He expressed that he considers himself “fortunate to have the opportunity to support and steer our continued objective to provide a safe space for BIPOC members of Curaleaf and our allies by encouraging diversity and inclusion, sharing knowledge, and amplifying experiences of BIPOC in the cannabis sector.”

Legitimate Holiday By Curaleaf This Year

After learning that Juneteenth was going to be acknowledged as a legitimate holiday by curaleaf Skokie this year, he stated that he was “so excited to see our senior leadership team take action to show they value, understand, and want to highlight the significance of this date in history while also providing our Team Members with a day for remembrance, reflection, and self-care.” This came after he had learned that Juneteenth was going to be acknowledged as a legitimate holiday the previous year.

Provide A Safe Space For BIPOC At Curaleaf

Curaleaf in Color was established in order to “provide a safe space for BIPOC at Curaleaf, locate each other, and relax together,” according to Raheem Uqdah, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility and curaleaf Skokie In Color’s Advisor and Coach. To figure out how we can work together to create a more inclusive industry, and I think we are starting to understand precisely how important what we’ve done can be.

Curaleaf Culture Of Collaboration

At curaleaf Skokie, as everywhere, a culture of collaboration flourishes as a result of leadership that pays attention to what its team members have to say. This setting creates the ideal conditions for employee resource groups (ERGs) to flourish. According to Lanett Austin, “It starts with actually listening to what your team members need and desire and then providing them with a safe space to feel included, respected, and recognized. “Once you have successfully created and fostered that environment, the creativity, ideas, solutions, planning, and implementation of significant and impactful initiatives (such as Juneteenth being a company-wide holiday) comes to fruition,” said the author.

Curaleaf In Color Leadership Team

Another member of the Curaleaf in Color leadership team, Staff Pharmacist Duclas Charles, PharmD, stated that he is “pleased to serve as a Co-Lead and be a part of the task force

initiating a cultural paradigm shift inside our firm and the cannabis industry as a whole.”

 The influence of our Employee Resource Groups goes beyond our objective to provide internal assistance for our members rather it focuses on how we can educate the larger business as a whole and bring about change by educating and collaborating with one another.

Celebrating Juneteenth As An Official Holiday
