(If You Want to Avoid Your Nutritionist’s Wrath)
Even if you have a patient dietician working with you to come up with a healthy diet, then you might want to avoid mentioning that you’re planning a visit to place like Bonefish Grill. If they’re really patient with you, then they might just roll their eyes at the very idea, even as they try to discourage you.
But it’s really hard to avoid the Bonefish Grill temptation, since the menu items here are generally just flavorful. Your nutritionist might want to warn about watching your portion sizes, as the yummy options here might encourage you to overeat. Sure, it’s a seafood place and seafood may be the healthier option, but it all depends on which seafood you get. And for the sake of your diet, you might want to avoid the following items at this restaurant:
Calamari as Your Starter
Yes, this gives you 26g of protein, which isn’t bad at all. And the price is nice with $12.85 for Calamari. But then again, you’re getting all that protein along with 1,240 calories—and that’s just for starters. You’re also getting 74g of fat, which includes 12g of saturated fat and 0.5g of trans fat.
Now you might think that the high fat levels might work for your keto diet, but that’s not the case at all. That’s because you’re also getting 116g of carbs, and that’s with 18g of added sugar. Obviously, this won’t work for any low-carb diet.
And even if you’re not on a low-sodium diet, this isn’t healthy for you. You’re getting 2,600mg of sodium with each order, and that exceeds the RDA for sodium for an average individual without any heart or blood pressure issues.
Grilled Salmon Superfood Salad
Hopefully, you’re old enough to realize that not all salads are healthy, especially at a restaurant. And that’s certainly true of this salad, even though it has “grilled salmon superfood” in its name. It’s just super-bad for you instead, even if you’re getting 57g of protein.
First off, this is super-salty, as you’re getting 2,980mg of sodium. That means you’re exceeding your sodium RDA by a lot, with just one salad. Then you’re getting 68g of fat, with 15g of saturated fat and 0.5g of trans fat. And it won’t work for a low-carb diet, either, since it comes with 88g of carbs with a whopping 32g of sugar.
This may not be the best salad either, if you’re trying to lose weight. That’s because of the 1,180 calories. When the other salads come with just 240 calories, you’re simply making the wrong salad choice for weight loss.
Bang Bang Shrimp Tacos with French Fries
Admittedly, the Bang Bang Shrimp Tacos at Bonefish Grill is one of the most beloved items in the entire menu. It features the popular Bang Bang Shrimp inside the crisp wonton shell, and it’s often served with French fries. A lot of people consider this their favorite menu item. And the 42g of protein is a great bonus.
But if you’re on some form of diet, then you might want to reconsider this choice. First off, it’s not good for weight loss since you’re getting 1,570 calories with this single order. You’re also getting 98g of fat, with 23g of saturated fat and 1g of trans fat. To put that in perspective, think about how you’re getting 5g of fat with each teaspoon of oil, which means you’re drinking 20 teaspoons of oil for the fat content.
As for you low-carb diet fans, this isn’t for you, either. Not with the 129g of carbs, which includes 20g of protein. And if you’re on a low sodium-diet, your nutritionist will froth at the mouth when they hear about how you ordered a dish that contained 3,830mg of sodium. Those on a low-sodium diet is supposed to stick to just 1,500mg of sodium per day, and you’re getting 2½ days’ worth of sodium in one go.
18-Ounce Bone-In Ribeye Steak
What if you’re diverging from your usual seafood order? If you get this steak, you’re getting 78g of protein along with just 1g of carbs. This might work if you share this particular order with a buddy, and you also get a few fresh sides of greens to balance things out.
But if you hoard this for yourself, you’re also getting 1,150 calories and 1,020mg of sodium. It also comes with 93g of fat, which includes a whopping 43g of saturated fat and even 4.5g of trans fat.
Applewood Bacon Mac and Cheese as a Side Dish
For a side dish, this mac and cheese is no good at all. It adds 690 calories to your total, along with 22g of saturated fat and 2,090mg of sodium. It’s just too much, especially when you realize that it’s just a small part of your meal.
Macadamia Nut Brownie
You should probably just avoid dessert altogether, if you’re on a diet. But if you’re determined to have some sweets to finish things off, just don’t get the Macadamia Nut Brownie. It’s loaded with 990 calories, 31g of saturated fat, an extra 220mg of sodium, and 122g of carbs with 100g of sugar. That’s just too indulgent for someone on a diet!
