How to fix Windows PC freezes and BSOD issues?

Among the several issues, one common and very frustrating problem on Windows devices is freezing on startup. When you turn on the PC, the screen immediately freezes or shows BSOD. Usually, it takes a few seconds to open whereas sometimes the screen freezes for hours. This error can appear due to any problem at the startup and can be resolved by restarting the device. But if the Windows screen freezes often then you should check for possible reasons and solutions.

Power restart your PC

When the PC screen freezes, you should restart it. Freeze or crash issues appear when the PC is unable to load all the required files. If the files are not loaded, you need to power restart the device. You can use the Shutdown option so you have to restart the PC manually. When the screen freezes, press the power button for about 5 seconds. Your computer will shut down forcefully. Now restart the PC and check whether the startup is normal or not. If the device is still showing the same error then check for other solutions.

Start your PC in Safe mode

If your PC is not starting correctly then you can try opening the PC in a safe mode. It is one of the best ways to resolve Windows freeze issues. Press the power button and hold the F8 key before the Windows logo appears. In case the logo appears, shut down the PC and again try to open the PC in safe mode. Choose the safe mode and then inspect for the error. 

Check for Windows file

You can get issues on startup when some of the Windows files are corrupted or not working. You need to repair those files to resolve the restart issue. But repairing OS files is not easy and if you edit any wrong file, the whole system may get into trouble. Repair the Windows files manually only if you know the correct steps. You can also use the Windows repair tool for fixing those files. Running the sfc/scannow tool on your PC can also repair OS-related files. Open the run bar and type sfc/scannow. This tool will inspect all the OS-related files on the device. Wait until the tool is running. Now restart the PC and now check for freeze or BSOD error. 

Check your security application

You install security applications like antivirus on the device to secure it from threats. Installing antivirus becomes necessary as malware and online crimes are increasing. But sometimes security applications can get your device into error. If you are getting BSOD or freezing after installing a security application on your device then check for its system requirements. The error mainly appears when the user installs any incompatible antivirus on the device. If the system requirements of your antivirus do not match the device specifications then you have to remove it. Go to the antivirus and check for its subscription. If you have days on the subscription then transfer the antivirus to another device. Also, you should cancel Avast automatic renewal. After the expiry, the plan won’t renew automatically. Get a compatible security application for your computer and then check for the error.

Disable the fast startup option

To resolve freezing issues on your PC, you can try disabling the fast startup option. 

  1. Click on the Search bar and type the power option
  2. Tap on Power & Sleep settings option from the results
  3. Select Additional power settings
  4. Click on Choose what the power button does option
  5. Hit on Change settings that are currently unavailable 
  6. Uncheck Turn on the fast startup option
  7. Hit on the Save Changes option
  8. Reboot your Windows PC and now check for the error. 

Disable AppXSvc on your device

Sometimes disabling AppXSvc on the PC can also fix the BSOD or freeze issues. Disable AppXSvc on your device and then check for the error.

  1. Open your computer and go to the Run bar
  2. Type Regedit and hit the OK button
  3. On User account control, click Yes
  4. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SYSTEM>ControlSet001>Services
  5. Tap AppXSvc and then double-click on Start opinion
  6. Set the Start value to 4 and hit the OK button. Now reboot your device and check for the error. 

Update all device drivers

Error on startup can appear when any of the device drivers are corrupted or outdated. Check the device drivers on your PC. Update all the drivers on your Windows device. The error appears when any of the drivers are corrupted. Repairing device drivers is difficult. Instead of repairing the driver, you can reinstall it. Remove the corrupted driver and then install a new one. But if you can’t find the corrupted or outdated driver then you can try using a driver repair tool. Search and install a compatible driver repair tool on your computer. Now run the tool on your computer and it will inspect all the drivers on your device. It will update/repair the device drivers. Now restart the computer and check for the error.
