Junk folder or spam folder is a place used to store unwanted incoming email so that it does not end up in the user’s mailbox. All major email clients and webmail services contain junk mail folders (commonly referred to as spam folders). These filtering systems help users reduce the amount of junk and promotional email common in the 21st century.
How does the Junk folder work?
When you receive a message, your email service checks the time it was sent, the sender’s email address, and the content of the message. If any of these aspects look suspicious, the client filters the email into the spam folder accordingly. Email services allow the user to decide what should or should not be sent to the Junk folder by configuring certain options.
How to access your junk folder or spam folder
The purpose of the Junk folder varies slightly depending on the email service and email program, but they are all in the same area.
Google Gmail
On the left side of the screen, under Category section, click the A selector that opens additional folder options in Gmail icon. You will then see an expanded menu labeled Spam.
Yahoo! mail
Once you sign in to your Yahoo! email, you see a selector that allows access to the Spam Folder on the left side of the screen.
Mail Outlook.com
Once you’re logged into your Outlook.com email account, you’ll see a selector that allows access to the Spam folder on the left side of the screen.
Note:
If you don’t see the list of folders, click the down arrow in Outlook.com next to Folders to expand the menu.

iPhone and iPad
If you’re using the default mail app on your iPhone or iPad, open the Mail app. Navigate to your mailboxes view by logging out of your inbox or any mail folders you are viewing.
In the mailboxes look, you see the Junk folder below the Drafts and Sent folders.
Gmail smartphone app
When using the Gmail app for an iOS or Android smartphone, tap the ☰ hamburger menu button in the top left corner to view all available folders. Select Spam from the list of options.
How long does mail stay in the Junk Folder?
Junk email remains in the Junk folder until you get close to the storage capacity, exceed the limit, or the spam folder is emptied. Depending on how much email you receive, this means that junk mail can remain in the folder for potentially years. If you receive a lot of email, or most email ends up in the junk folder, it may only keep junk mail for a month or two.
