Taxpayers essentially bailed out General Motors (a private company) and their union, but soon they didn't bail out Detroit, they also had a union. This got us thinking for a second; however General Motors (GM) paid almost $10 billion.  If Detroit was abandoned by the US government, would it foot the bill?
