The Critical Role of Laparoscopy in Infertility Treatment

Laparoscopy is a surgical procedure. Just like any other surgical treatment, it allows doctors to see inside the patient’s body. However, laparoscopy is popular among surgeons because it’s minimally invasive. While performing laparoscopy, surgeons avoid making large incisions. The risk of inflammation is lower.

The patient’s tissues are also less likely to pick up long-term scars. Needless to say, this minimally invasive intervention also costs less. Are you worrying about IVF costs in Delhi? Then using laparoscopy as part of your fertility testing process will help you. Laparoscopic surgery doesn’t cost as much as other fertility testing options.

Why Do Fertility Experts Recommend Laparoscopic Surgeries?

Doctors perform laparoscopic surgeries to evaluate different structures of the patients’ reproductive systems. They examine the patients’ ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uteri. Doctors can identify issues in the patients’ reproductive organs during and after this process.

They identify issues that are preventing conception. Laparoscopic surgery often reveals issues or conditions that are not detectable with other fertility testing techniques. After undergoing laparoscopic surgery, a patient may get diagnosed with the following conditions –

  • Endometriosis
  • Fibroids or cysts in the patient’s reproductive system
  • Blocked fallopian tubes
  • Large build-ups of scar tissue

Laparoscopy may reveal other abnormalities in the patient’s reproductive system. That’s why when a female has unexplained infertility issues, doctors recommend this surgery. Laparoscopic surgery isn’t the first thing doctors recommend.

They first recommend various diagnostic tests like ovulation testing, hysterosalpingography, ovarian reserve testing, hormone testing, and imaging tests. If the test results are normal, but the female is still unable to conceive, the doctors recommend laparoscopic surgery.

Laparoscopy in Fertility Treatment – Understanding the Procedure

Laparoscopic surgery is a relatively simple outpatient procedure. Patients typically undergo this surgery in hospitals, surgical centres, or fertility doctors’ offices.

  • Preparation: Like with most surgeries, patients need to fast for at least 8 hours before the process. Doctors give patients general anesthesia before the operation.
  • Incisions: When the patient is fully unconscious, the surgeons make minor incisions below her navel. They use small and sharp syringes to make these incisions. Then, they pump carbon dioxide (CO2) through the syringe. This elevates the patient’s abdominal wall from her other internal organs.
  • Laparoscopy: When there’s enough CO2 inside the patient’s abdomen, the surgeons insert a laparoscope. The laparoscope goes through the incision. It features a camera that’s connected to an external viewing device.
  • Analysis: The laparoscope gives magnified images of the patient’s internal organs. The surgeons then analyse the patient’s ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes, and other reproductive organs on the viewing device.
  • Identifying Abnormalities: The laparoscope produces clear images. So, doctors can easily identify apparent abnormalities in the patient’s internal reproductive organs. They typically look for scars, signs of endometriosis, cysts, fibroids, and pelvic adhesions.
  • Blockage Detection: If the surgeons suspect the presence of blockages in the patient’s fallopian tubes, they inject a dye from her cervix. The dye gives clear views of any potential blockages in the patient’s fallopian tubes.
  • Additional Incisions: In some cases, the surgeons may make other incisions in the patient’s body. They use these incisions to insert clinical tools into the patient’s body. The viewing device guides the surgeons regarding what organs they should target or where to direct the clinical tools.
  • Corrections: Using these techniques, surgeons can correct abnormalities in the patient’s reproductive system right there on the spot. For instance, let’s say the surgeons discover cysts and fibroids in the patient’s reproductive surgeon during the laparoscopy. They may remove them right after detecting them on their viewing device.

Doctors can also unblock fallopian tubes or fix the patient’s scar or endometrial tissues during this process. Surgeons who take these actions help reduce average IVF costs in Delhi. Their timely actions ensure that the patient doesn’t need further evaluation or other surgeries.

Concluding the Laparoscopic Surgery

When the surgeons are content with the process, they take out the laparoscope from the patient’s body. They also remove other clinical instruments. They let out the CO2 using a brand-new syringe. Then, they stitch or clip back the incisions, apply a dressing, and wait for the patient to wake up.

Patients may experience slight pain upon waking. Their bodies are also prone to viral, bacterial, or fungal infections during the early post-surgery recovery stages. Their fertility doctors may ask them to take antibiotics or pain relievers to avoid these risks of pain and infections.

The Importance of Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery will reveal various critical details about a female’s reproductive system. These details help fertility experts determine and understand the causes behind female infertility. Surgeons can even correct some of the abnormalities they discover during this procedure.

All of these factors make laparoscopic surgeries key pillars of modern-day fertility treatments. Doctors learn a lot from the results of laparoscopic surgeries. They recommend endometriosis treatment, ovarian cystectomy, myomectomy, and other advanced surgeries using the test results.
