Israel wants to take full control of the occupied Palestinian territories. This is according to the report of an independent commission of inquiry formed by the UN Human Rights Council. A 16-page report released on Tuesday states, “It will not be enough just to end the occupation.” It called on the Palestinians to take further steps to ensure equal human rights.
“Israel has no intention of ending the occupation,” the report said, citing evidence. Israel is on the path to “full control” of the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem. The country occupied the area in the 1967 war. It was later annexed by Israel, which was never recognized by the international community.
The commission said “the Israeli government has been working to change the demographic structure of the Palestinian people and to maintain a conducive environment for the Israeli settlers.”
The report cites, for example, an Israeli law denying Palestinians their normal civil rights by marrying Israeli citizens. It accused Israel of granting “separate civil status, rights and legal protections” to Palestinian (Arab) citizens.
More than seven million Israeli settlers are currently living in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem settlements. More than 3 million Palestinians live in the area. The Israeli settlements here are protected. These housing complexes, built solely to house Jews, are illegal under international law.

Leading human rights groups, such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, have compared Israel’s anti-Palestinian rhetoric to racism.
The commission was formed after the Israeli invasion of the besieged Gaza Strip in May 2021. Israeli airstrikes kill 280 Palestinians in Gaza Thirteen people were killed in Israel. The commission was asked to investigate human rights violations before and after the aggression.
The report was welcomed by Hamas and the Palestinian Authority. They also called for Israel to be held accountable for ending impunity. On the other hand, Israel has rejected the report. The country’s foreign ministry said it was a “waste of money and labor” to justify blaming others.
