What is hand grip strength?

Hand Grip Strength is the ability of your fingers to resist strain or extension. It is not a replacement for hand/finger flexibility. In other words, if you have very little flexibility in the palm of your hands and digits, you will need more grip strength to perform certain tasks such as catching a baseball. Of course, there are many types of grip strength, but we will stick with just two attributes that matter during sports performance.

Static Grip Strength is the ability of your fingers to resist force when you are not moving. A good example is lifting a heavy object such as a 100-pound dumbbell. You might be tempted to use your entire core and lower back, but all you will accomplish is fatiguing yourself in an inefficient way. To get the most from your grip training, start with empty (or nearly so) barbells or dumbbells, Chalk Balls, or some other form of unweighted hand grippers. Dumbbells are a bit easier to stabilise because their mass helps you better resist the force of your palm on the handle. Chalk Balls can be hard to see at first, and you don’t have as much body weight as when lifting heavyweights. In my opinion, the best way to measure grip strength is using a force plate. The advantage of using a force plate is that it measures the hand and finger forces at all angles from any position. The test takes less than five minutes to complete and can measure both active and passive grip strengths.
