Golf R “20 Years” is the fastest Volkswagen R ever seen on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife

Wapcar Automotive News – The chronograph says it all: The new Golf R “20 Years” is the fastest R model ever on the German Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit. The commemorative car with increased power has continued to improve the previous lap record of a Golf R on a track of 20,832 km in four seconds.

The 2022 VW Golf R-Line “20 Years” reached an official lap time of 7 hours 47.31 minutes. With exclusive standard equipment, optimized driving dynamics and a standard output of 245 kW (333 PS), the Golf R “20 Years” offers greatly improved performance and guarantees a motorsport experience. emotional play between “Schwedenkreuz” and “Döttinger Höhe”. track sections.

The 20th Anniversary Sport Edition delivers 10 kW more than the current production version of the Golf R. Armed with this engine power, the Golf “20 Years” accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds; Its electronically limited top speed is 270 km/h. Thanks to the significantly improved engine response, the increased power is also noticeable in everyday situations such as overtaking.

But it’s not just the power of the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes this special edition model the most dynamic Volkswagen R ever on Nordschleife. The obvious increase in performance is also the result of extensive standard equipment with technical highlights such as the R-Performance package, Driving Dynamics Manager and R-Performance Torque Vectoring.

What better place to check out this combination than the Nürburgring-Nordschleife? The development of powerful Golf R models with all-wheel drive can be impressively documented over the past 20 years.

Volkswagen R touring racer and development driver Benjamin Leuchter took up the task and drove the special edition model on the legendary track. He was also actively involved in the creation of the R-Performance package for the Golf R “20 Years”. Along with the usual ‘Comfort’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Race’ driving configurations, the special edition comes as standard with additional ‘Special’ and ‘Drift’ configurations.

To drive on the Nordschleife track, the driver chose the “Special” driving style, developed for this track. This configuration gives the car a setup that meets the unique needs of perhaps the most demanding racetracks in the world. This includes adjusting the shock absorbers to a softer and more comfortable setting due to huge loads at peak performance levels when driving on such roads.

As one of 15 possible settings of the controlled dampers, this damper ensures optimal road contact on high-impact tracks, such as the Nürburgring. Coupled with the right steering wheel and settings, this makes it ideal for many fast and medium-fast turns on the Nordschleife.

In the “Individual” mode of the Driving Dynamics Manager, you can also manually adjust all parameters, such as R-Performance Torque Measurement or engine sound and adjust them according to personal preference.

The timed lap of the Nürburgring-Nordschleife took place in the form of rolling in front of the T13 stand. The start and end times of the measurement take place at the top and bottom of the stands – the intermediate 200 meters do not count. Confidence in the car is not only the key to setting records but also the joy of safe driving.

Always on track, the “20-year-old” Golf R easily mastered rapid changes between the curb and subsequent corners like the “Hatzenbach”. The shifting characteristics of the revised 7-speed transmission allow for more intensive gearshifts and make the driving experience of the “20-year-old” Golf R even more emotional. The optimized sound of the exhaust system in the low rpm range and the rougher engine sound in the cabin enhance the vehicle’s dynamic performance.

The development progress over its predecessor is also reflected in the engine improvement of the Volkswagen R commemorative model. The pre-charged turbocharger is also kept at a constant speed in overload mode to let the engine run. can develop faster capacity in subsequent accelerations. This process is aided by a permanently open throttle. When the driver takes his foot off the accelerator and then accelerates again, this allows for a faster accumulation of torque and greatly improves engine responsiveness.

The Golf R “20 Years” with performance-oriented transmission technology reached speeds close to 240 km/h on the slopes of the “Schwedenkreuz”, while 265 km/h was measured on the “Döttinger Höhe” on the Nuerburgring track. The new record time of 7 hours 47.31 minutes represents a four-second improvement over the previous model and is a special gift for the Volkswagen R on the occasion of the model’s 20th anniversary.

Blurring the line between production and racing cars. The Golf R “20 Years” easily bridges the gap between the everyday companion and the thoroughbred athlete.

With such a car, he can drive here on the Nürburgring and the next stop is a baker or DIY shop. This car is really versatile and can do anything, says Benjamin Leuchter. And that’s exactly the concept that Volkswagen R pursues: Volkswagen’s premium brand has been offering exceptional models since 2002. With their innovative performance and expressive design, they’re taking the world by storm. worldwide fans from Volkswagen.

The continuous and rapid evolution to further performance can be easily seen by looking at some vehicle data from previous model years. Starting with the Golf R32 with 177 kW (241 hp) and a 3.2-liter six-cylinder as the drive unit, to the Golf 6 R with 199 kW (270 hp) and a boosted four-cylinder engine. Pressure from 2.0 liters, Performance-oriented Golf models up to the “20 Years” Golf R with 245 kW (333 PS) become not only more powerful but also faster.

The Volkswagen R celebrates the successful development of this model with the Golf R “20 years”. A limited production time of about one year makes the special edition model a collector’s item as soon as it gets off the production line.
