How to do Carpet Cleaning at home?

Carpet

Carpet cleaning is a task that takes a lot of time and hence is a dreary choice. If you own a carpet, it must cost you a lot of time to keep it clean. In addition to spilled food, pet-related accidents, or dirt and grease that makes it dirty, even if you take it outside to clean in the snow, it needs a thorough cleaning before you can use it. However, don’t worry, as there are impressive hacks to clean the stains on the carpet.

Your carpet can be cleaned with salt, baking soda, and shaving cream. However, remember that not all rugs and carpets have a similar texture; hence you may need different maintenance techniques. You can upkeep some synthetic carpets through stain-resistant treatments. These DIY hacks will show you how to clean your home’s carpet quickly and effectively. Shag rugs and wool carpets are more delicate, so they need more care and must be cleaned more often.

1. Baking Soda

With some quick and easy steps, you can bring your dull and dusty carpet to life with simple baking soda powder.

This solution is beneficial when you have spilled oil or have greasy stains on your carpet that have left you scratching your head.

Cover the stained area with baking soda, and leave it like that for a short time. The powder would appear as dry cakes upon soaking up all the oiliness. Use the vacuum now to get rid of all the crusts, and then dab the leftover stain with the above technique to make it lighter.

2. Toothbrushes

Some areas of shag carpet are simply beyond the reach of vacuum cleaners. Soft-bristled toothbrushes are a great alternative for carpet cleaning, especially while rubbing off the settled stains. Depending upon the nature of the stain, you can apply baking soda or vinegar to it and then treat it with a toothbrush.

3. Dab It Dry

Avoid rubbing the stain on the carpet because it will spread the stain to a greater area, and rubbing it with the cleaning solution will cause the stain to seep into deeper layers of the carpet, damaging its fabric and color. The safe way to clear the stain is to dab the blot dry. Afterward, dip a cotton swab or cloth in the cleaning solution and dab it over the stain. The solution-dipped cotton swab or cloth would wet the stain and remove it. If the stain is difficult to remove, the correct and safe way to deal with the blot is to dab it dry. Take a cloth and dip it in the cleaning solution of your choice. Dab the stain over and over. The dipped cloth or cotton swab would slowly wet the stain and soak it in. If the stain is difficult, you don’t have to hurry it. Take your time, and wipe inward while blotting. This will keep the stain in place and stop it from spreading.

4. Shaving Cream

A light-colored carpet is prone to dirt and grease stains worse than residual crumbs. If you’ve ever dropped a drink or spaghetti on your rug, it’s not as bad as you think. Shaving cream is an excellent solution for getting rid of the mess.

Apply shaving cream to the stain after vacuuming your rug, let it stay for a few minutes, and then wipe away the stain with a damp cloth or sponge.

5. Salt

For cleaning your rugs, salt can be an excellent tool. If you get oil, use a 4:1 mixture of alcohol and salt. Rub it into the affected area, and it will come right off. The trick to blotting up spilled ketchup or wine is to sprinkle salt generously and leave it for a few minutes. The salt absorbs the stain and moisture, then vacuum it until it is completely gone.

6. Ironing the Stain

Another tool that can help you remove the stain from your carpets and rugs is using an iron. After cleaning the spot with the vacuum:

  1. Ensure all the dirt particles have been removed.
  2. As soon as all the solid particles are gone, focus only on the smear.
  3. In the next step, mix water, and white vinegar in a ratio of 1:3, then apply it to the stain with a cloth and leave it on for at least 5-10 minutes.

Using a wet cloth or towel, place the wet solution over the stain, and heat the iron while the towel is on it. The heat will eliminate the solution, leaving no smear on the carpet. Hence, this is an amazing carpet cleaning hack.

7. Ice Cubes

When you have children at home, you need ninja-level cleaning skills to maintain carpets. Even worse than spilled food is the tangled chewing gum when it has been crushed while still soft, which makes it very difficult to remove. Ice cubes can be placed on the sticky area, making it easier to pull the gum out. The ice will make it harden, allowing it to be easily pulled out. You can remove gum from the carpet with a blunt object such as a spoon or butter knife.
