In a study conducted by the consumer group Which?, Ferrero Rocher was found to be the worst for excessive wrapping.

Which? discovered that wrapping made up to 42 percent of the total weight of the Ferrero Rocher collection tray, with only 11 percent of that being recyclable.

Thorntons’ Continental Selection’s packaging accounted for 29.4 percent of its weight, with Cadbury Milk Tray accounting for 22.6 percent. Lindt’s Lindor Mix, on the other hand, had only 11.5 percent packaging.

The only non-recyclable components of that product are the individual wrappers.

The makers of the Ferrero Rocher collection tray claimed that the “local infrastructure” in the UK made recycling a large portion of their packaging impossible. “It is a delicately created product, and the packaging is of fundamental importance to protect our chocolates from damage during transport, in stores, and at home,” they said. Another issue raised by the report was that many customers were unsure what the recycling advice on chocolate meant.
Just under half (48 percent) incorrectly believed that a green dot on the side of the box indicated that it could be recycled. It actually means that the manufacturer contributes to a recycling program.
